Lately I asked my students to name the best and
worst of Hong Kong. Among the best, frequently quoted were convenience,
shopping, colorful city life. Everyone seems to agree on the worst: air
pollution.
One of my favorite moments spent in Hong Kong was taking a Star Ferry ride
across the Victoria harbour on a cool spring night. Embarking on Tsim Sha
Tsui stop, as the ferry gradually pulled out and sailed in the wind towards
the plethora of lights scattered all over the sharply defined landscape, one
couldn't help feeling mesmerized. Ever since the 90s, such a moment became
rare. To the right is a photo I took from my Hong Kong home in 2001, the
visibility was already greatly reduced. It was smog, not fog, that presided
over the harbour.
Air pollution is indeed a big problem for Hong Kong. Hong Kong certainly
cannot tackle this problem alone, it needs cooperation from Greater China
region as a whole. If possible, get yourself an air purifier, watch the
daily published air pollution index to determine your level of activities
that you intend to conduct outdoors.
