What are the most important factors ensuring success in the immigration
process? I believe them to be perseverance and optimism. I have
moved twice in my life, once from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and the other from
Hong Kong to Australia (hopefully the last?). As many mainlanders who made
their way to Hong Kong 30 years ago, penniless, away from their family and
friends, I was able to build a successful career from scratch, and up till
today, still look back on these struggling days with pride. This time,
although I don't need to worry about subsistence, getting used to all sorts
of new rules and social norms on a daily basis is still no easy task at my
age. If you have already made the decision to immigrate, don't get stuck in the endless comparisons with the past, because they are irrelevant. Always be curious about the history, culture and people of the new place, try to understand how things are done and WHY? A fighting spirit is your best companion. Look ahead with the most optimism you can afford, always be hopeful, because hope will only be reserved for those who try hard enough. |

My favorite suburb in Brisbane is Teneriffe, because it is a riverside
location with rows of woolstore loft apartments housed in red-brick facade.
Quite a few of these loft apartments enjoy an uninterrupted river view,
while the neighborhood also affords many trendy gourmet restaurants. I also
like the timber floor, exposed brick wall and extremely tall ceilings.
However, one of the biggest drawback is the lack of grocery shopping. The
closest supermarket is either a ferry ride away in Bulimba or 20 minutes
walk away in New Farm. Since I don't drive, this is quite a major
consideration. Also, the riverside drive in Teneriffe is two-lane each way,
so the noise from car traffic at night could be quite disturbing. But,
Teneriffe is always an alluring area to look at from the ferry. |
