June 24, 2004 In terms of shopping, clothes in Brisbane are just so unfashionable and expensive, as compared to Hong Kong. I will just need to stock up the next time I go visit friends in Hong Kong. But the most frustrating shopping inconvenience for me is the extremely pricey appliances and electronic goods, including PC, digital camera, printer, peripherals, gadgets, so on and so forth. Compared to internet shopping price in the US, Brisbane price is about 20-40% higher.

June 22, 2004 The most unreasonably priced service in Australia is anything telecom-related, name it, the home phone network, the wireless network, ADSL/Cable. I would venture to say that Telstra is perhaps the least efficient telecom operator in the whole world, I really can't put to words how frustrated they make me feel. Despite my repeated confirmation at the kiosk or through the customer service, they still managed to entirely mess up my phone setup, leaving me entirely cut off from modern communication for a whole week.

Since they are a monopoly, the basic line rental is a staggering 30 AUD a month. On top of this, each call costs 17 cents! For cell phone, the cost is just equally insane! Have you heard of the term flagfall charge? Can you imagine paying over 0.5 AUD per minute for your cell phone? What's more, ADSL used to cost over 80 AUD a month when I first arrived. Recently due to increasing competition, I was able to cut my ADSL cost down to below 60 AUD a month, well, still quite a bit more expensive than Hong Kong.

June 1, 2004 My recent move to another residential complex has proven disastrous so far. First of all, I was too optimistic and tried to argue for a reduction in rent at my old place while the general rental has recently risen. The landlord sniffed at my offer and order for my vacating the apartment in two weeks. Then I scrambled to find a nearby fully-furnished apartment in an extremely tight rental market just 11 days before my moving date. The following sleepless nights were subsequently spent on planning and coping with every aspect of moving, to say the least, disconnecting and reconnecting all utilities, on my own.

When the move finally happened, something went terribly wrong. I was left without a phone access for a whole week. Now I really don't know how to live a life without the internet. After wandering about in the streets for a whole day, I eventually gave in and sat myself in front of a PC at an internet cafe. Life is good after all.
